GFC Grassroots Review

GFC is the only nonprofit dedicated to identifying, funding, and coaching grassroots organizations that empower children and youth. Our monthly newsletter features the work of our partners and youth leaders, exciting GFC campaigns and events, and new initiatives.

Meaningful child participation through play-based education

In July, GFC partners from sub-Saharan Africa came together in Uganda to share their ideas for using play to increase children’s zest for education. They spoke about how learning through play boosts children’s social skills, helps them grasp complicated subjects, and provides new experiences. Learn more about the convening, which was part of GFC’s Partnership to Educate All Kids (PEAK) initiative and get some ideas for creative educational games.

⭐️ Across the world, partners in GFC’s PEAK initiative – which is supported by the LEGO Foundation – are connecting to expand play-based learning to further children’s education. Keep up with their experiences via our Instagram page.

The impact of the pandemic on philanthropy

During the COVID-19 pandemic, GFC reaffirmed our commitment to maximum flexibility for our grassroots partners, and many other organizations in the sector loosened or eliminated grant restrictions. We already knew the power of flexible funding, and we were thrilled to see other funders adopt similar trust-based practices. In this blog post, GFC President and CEO John Hecklinger delves into a new report from the Center for Effective Philanthropy that examines how philanthropy changed with the pandemic.

GFC at the Clinton Global Initiative Meeting

GFC's Christine Burkhart and Rodrigo Barraza speaking at the 2023 CGI meeting.

In September, we proudly showcased our work at the Clinton Global Initiative 2023 Meeting. Vice President of Strategic Partnerships Christine Burkhart spoke about how GFC’s Climate Spark Fund provides funding and technical support to young people working on climate action. Regional Co-Director of GFC’s Americas team Rodrigo Barraza discussed unhealthy ideas around masculinity and the innovative solutions GFC and its grassroots partners have developed to address it. Find out more about the meeting.

⭐️ This October, 47 grassroots organizations from our HEEL initiative (which engages boys and young men in promoting healthy masculinities and gender justice) and GEM initiative (which aims to protect the safety and rights of adolescent migrant girls) will come together in Guatemala for a convening. Watch this video on how we support migrant girls and stay tuned for more info.
